A very Yassy Christmas!

A Christmas cottage in Yass

Every year I write a Yass-mas Carol for friends and family. I thought I would share it with you at this time of goodwill. So here tis, my carol for 2015.

“Away on a hilltop,
our crib is the best!”
says CC and The Dude
from their high country nest.

The stars in the bright sky
look down where they play.
The dudes in the country
are country to stay.

The cattle are mooing,
the rooster awakes,
but that’s all the noise
that the neighbours do make.

We love our bush garden,
looking down from on high,
so come join our peacetime
’til morning is nigh.

Wishing you all a very happy holiday! And see you in 2016…

Christmas lights (Unplugged version)

Christmas lights, the unplugged version

We wanted to keep it simple this year.

Hadn’t felt much like Christmas, until the last minute.

On Christmas Eve we decorated the little Christmas tree then sat down to a gourmet, cold spread.

Just the two of us,

before the Christmas Day travelling.

Salmon dip, Brie, turkey, mortadella, sun-dried tomato and feta salad, Greek salad, rocket leaves. Elderflower and lime cider.

Each mouthful an explosion.

Then a crimson light washed over the room, through the window,

and coloured our faces as on a hot day.

We rushed out mid-bite to watch the glorious sunset.

The sun melted behind the ‘veggie patch’,

a dormant garden ringed by pine trees.

Our own Christmas light show, the natural way!

Reminded me: the simple things in life are often the best.

Lights! Camera! …Santa!!

XMAS LIGHTS THIS WAY

One of my all-time favourite drives … one I count down sleeps to … is driving around the Christmas lights in town.

And this year the Yass locals have really gotten into the Santa swing of things! They’ve gone all out.

The light displays are bigger, better and brighter! and they include lights on roofs, fences and trees, inflatables of every shape and size, moving glowing reindeer, even disco lights and a TV screen!

A lot of the little shops in the main street create sparkly window displays too. There is a town competition, judged for the best house and the best shop window.

Yass is a very hilly town, like Newcastle (in New South Wales, Australia) or San Francisco, so some of the bedazzling houses can be seen across the river valley from houses on the other side of town!

Here’s one of my favourite sets of Chrissie lights in town, a cottage up on the hill near the high school. My money’s on it to win! What do you think?

As a newbie, I felt self-conscious hoisting my tripod and Fuji on one shoulder, one foot on the gravel and the other on the dandelion path. But I had a cover story worked out…

If anyone asked me, I was going to say:

‘It’s OK. I’m the elf and safety inspector!’

Enjoy. With jingle cheers to all!
